God—or some other teetering confluence—had given me a month. The spate of jobs I had collected since moving to the city: infrequent chances to build animatronic sculptures with a Bushwick artist; a student in Canarsie needing algebra help; a freelance job where I mindlessly rearranged sentences to trick Google into seeing relevance in the profoundly irrelevant; and a low-key, often-till-early-AM box office job I lucked into—these were not enough, and the label would pay my November rent, while I each day set up and broke down a studio entirely in my girlfriend’s closet, yards away from what we were later told is the loudest neighborhood in Manhattan.
