Book Review: Suddenly, A Knock On the Door

Keret

After all the stories I’ve read by Etgar Keret, I keep thinking that there is no way he can keep this up. There is just no way that he can keep writing stories that are so unlike anything else I read, stories more full of compassion, tenderness, and absurdity than I’ve ever seen before. At some point he has to run out of tricks, things have to start repeating.

But then, Keret goes and writes Suddenly, A Knock On the Door. He just had to go and prove me wrong, or at least that he is nowhere near the point of exhaustion yet.

Frankly, I loved each of these stories as much as I’ve ever loved any Keret story before. Mind you, Keret is one of my favorite authors writing today. There is just no way to describe the child-like wonder I feel when I read an Etgar Keret story, but I definitely felt that for the stories in this collection.

I’d even seen a few of these stories before, either in recent journals or when he read the title story at the AWP convention in Denver a few years ago. It didn’t matter. I enjoyed the old ones just as much as the new, perhaps even a little more so because they felt like such good old friends.

What else can I say? I don’t want to talk about any of the stories because I want you to be able to discover them on your own. All I can say is that this collection is everything I hoped for. I can’t wait for his next.
