Win a Copy of Joseph Michael Owens’ “Shenanigans”

We’ve been pretty excited about InDigest blog editor Joseph Michael Owens first book Shenanigans! The book is a series of stories about Benji, a man who is trying to move along with his life, fly under the radar, get to the end of the workday and get home to his girlfriend and his dogs. But little things get in Benji’s way: the discovery of “a blue,” a hair in his coffee, his father’s heart attack. It’s charming, often funny, and even more often imbued with a melancholy hope that is emblematic of how we try to get through the everyday trauma of life.

We’re so fond of Joe’s book, we’re going to give away a signed copy of Shenanigans! this week. In the comments answer the question: What’s the best book you’ve read this year? On Friday we’ll randomly select and announce a winner.

So, get to the telling.

A Frolic of His Own by William Gaddis. It’s maybe more admirable than lovable, but I’ve been talking and thinking about this book more than any other…

In terms of books that came out this year, probably Are You My Mother? by Alison Bechdel. I had high expectations going into it and Bechdel exceeded them.

Maybe not really my favorite of the year, but “Self-Portrait Abroad” has really stuck with me since I read it. It’s got that really subtle melancholy I associate with another period, and it’s working.

My favorite book I’ve read this year is probably The Latehomecomer by Kao Kalia Yang. It’s been out for a few years, but I only recently discovered it. It’s a strikingly honest memoir about a Hmong family who immigrated to Minnesota, and I found it a great read.

The best book I’ve read all year is one that I just finished a few days ago: A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan. Sounds like Owen’s book might have a few thing in common with Good Squad and it’s take on adulthood as less than exhilarating. I’ve heard Egan’s name so many times and now know why: she’s a fantastic writer.
