Issue #21 Newsletter

CURRENT ISSUE 08/2011
InDigest no.21

Dear Readers,

Things are happening!

The new issue is out, and we’ve launched a new series in it called The Lyric Sheet where musicians preview lyrics to songs they have not released. It’s kind of the inversion of what music blogs do. Or something like that. Our first contributors for The Lyric Sheet are Beirut’s Zach Condon and Richard Buckner. More on the new issue in a minute.

If you’re in New York we’ve got two readings coming up. On Sunday the 14th we’ve got novelists Matt Bell, Michael Czyzniejewski, and Robert Lopez reading with us at LPR at 7. Then on Wednesday (one week from today) we’ve got our Issue #21 Launch Party w. Paul Siegell, Monica McClure, Wendy Xu, Dana Rossi, and lots of others. More on that here.

Don’t forget you can still get a copy of InDigest Editions first book, Brad Liening’s We Are Doomed: Dispatches From the City of the Future.

Also, we’ve just welcomed on our new blog editor Joseph M. Owens. Stop by the blog and appreciate his handywork. And don’t forget that the InDefinite Podcast is back to being a weekly affair and we’ve had some great guests lately including Micah Ballard, Lee Rourke, Lizzy Acker, David Phillip Mullins, Deb Olin Unferth, Abby Frucht, and others.

Hope you enjoy whatever you decide to enjoy.

New Exits

by Monica McClure

Oh, look. The youth are under the influence
and it’s beautiful.

Our fathers won’t read poetry, we say.
We fall in love with more women each day.

TO A FRIEND IN A FOUR-WALLED ROOM WITH NO WINDOWS

by Amy Bergen

You’re not missing much. Only the flat panel of life, ever uninterested, ever discordant. Try to keep sleeping, but when the body wants to be awake it wants to be awake. Wait until I come for you. It may be a while.

Here is what will distract you. Breaking a glass. Pure, articulate pain. It sounds unpleasant but it’s easier than pain without a voice, which is almost impossible

The Lyric Sheet: “East Harlem” by Zach Condon

This issue sees the launch of our new feature The Lyric Sheet, a series where artists present the lyrics to upcoming releases before you can hear the music.

THE LYRIC SHEET:

Beirut’s Zach Condon – “East Harlem”

Another rose wilts in East Harlem
And uptown downtown, a thousand miles between us
She is waiting for the night to fall,
Let it fall I’ll never make it in time

Sound is a color I know….

Sound of your breath in the cold…

The battle between concept and intuition is definitely something I’ve struggled with over the past few years and am finally starting to figure out! I’m still pretty young so a lot of the time I still feel very new to art-making – I’ve really only been pursuing it seriously for the past few years – but am learning to trust my instincts more and more.
